Introduction to Loudoun County

Loudoun County is one of the most populated in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Nearly 350,000 people call it home.

The county has 521 square miles of land within its borders. It was founded in the mid-1700s and is rich with historical sites.

Loudoun County is interesting in that it can be divided up into two distinct sections. The western part of the county is far more rural than the eastern.

Part of the growth in the popularity of the county has been due to the technology industry and, because of that, some of the smaller communities on the eastern side of Loudoun County have gotten far more populous in recent decades.

The Washington Metro Silver Line will be extending into the county, if plans go as intended. Dulles International Airport is located partially within Loudoun County, as well, providing a major hub of transportation.

Some of the most important roadways through the county include State Route 28, US Route 15 and State Route 267, also known as the Dulles Greenway.

There is a small, executive airport located in Leesburg, which takes private and corporate flights.

Homes for sale in Loudoun County vary tremendously in size and style depending upon where they’re located. In the most populated areas to the east, of course, the homes for sale tend to be more densely packed than they are as one moves westward, into more rural environs.

The homes for sale can also vary quite a bit in price. The commuter heavy areas, such as Ashburn, offer condominium properties alongside many single-family homes. Once one moves toward Purcellville and other less populated areas, very large estate properties become more common.

Loudoun County offers convenient access to Washington D.C. for commuters, but get too far west and it becomes much more rural and the drive times will become significantly longer.

Ashburn

Ashburn is in the northeast of Loudoun County. It’s only 30 miles from Washington D.C., making it convenient for commuting. There are also developments that are very well planned out, making them convenient for getting around without a car.

Leesburg

Leesburg is an historic town with plenty of tech businesses, blending the best of the old and the new. The homes for sale in this part of Loudoun County tend to be larger, with expansive lots. These are quite stately homes, in many regards, many of them having brick or stone exteriors. In this area, colonial designs are very popular among the available inventory.

Purcellville

Purcellville is not a large city, but it is a major hub in the more rural part of Loudoun County. This is a small town, with fewer than 8,000 people in total and a vast selection of historical sites to explore. Loudoun Homes for sale in this area tend to be newer, as the population has grown. Round Hill

Round Hill epitomizes the more rural areas for which Loudoun County is known. Sterling

Sterling is one of the larger areas in Loudoun County, with around 30,000 people calling it home. It’s also partially home to Dulles International Airport. This is one of the most well-known centers of technology in Loudoun County. Homes for sale here include quite a few townhouse options and plenty of condos. There are some interesting neighborhoods where different housing styles are mixed together and where walkable planning was emphasized from the start.
